Emergency food and water are important components of any emergency preparedness plan and survival kit.  In times of disasters, you may not be able to have any access to water or food supplies, even if you have a lot of money to spend.  The best way to ensure that you and members of your family, including your pets, can live through emergency situations or calamities like floods, hurricanes, power outages, earthquakes and fires is to prepare in advance emergency food supplies and water storage units that could last from 72 hours and are portable too.  Even if emergency rescue units and paramedics do not reach your home or area immediately, you can be assured that every member of your household will not get sick, or even die, of starvation or dehydration.

In preparing for emergency food and water, one should first think of the needs of each member of the family.  If you have an infant or a senior in your home, you have to take into consideration their special needs while preparing your emergency food.  Next, you need to prepare an emergency water storage plan that will not only provide clean water for drinking but also, if applicable, for hygienic and sanitation purposes.  Lastly, it is vital that you carefully choose the type of food that you will store in your survival kits.  Aside from preparing the usual foods eaten by your family, you also need to choose ones that have longer shelf life.

In order to make the job of organizing or planning emergency food and water kits easy for the whole family, it may be a wise idea to invest in food ration bars or ready-to-eat meals.  These do not only have longer shelf life, but also are also easier to store and carry in case you need to evacuate or leave your home.

Since it would be impossible to have a six-month supply of clean water, your emergency food supplies kit should also contain portable water filtration system so you can safely use other sources, such as rainwater and even water stored in your hot-water tank or pool.Other important tools that you need to add in your emergency food and water supplies are utensils, mechanical can opener, and even cooking units and supplies.  Also, electric power and gas may not be available after a disaster strikes, you need to make sure that you have equipment that can help you boil water or cook food properly to ensure your families health.

Water and food are the basic essential items that all beings must have access to in order to survive. Having essential food that is safe and has sufficient nutrition along with water that is safe is considered a basic human necessity. But when it is a natural or man-made disaster the scenario is completely changed. Our society has witnessed such adverse times when people crave for a single grain of food and a mouthful of water. The only reason these are emergencies is that either we were not prepared with adequate emergency supplies or enough informed about tackling such situations.

Being entirely prepared to face a crisis is next to impossible as they occur without prior notice. No matter how grave a disaster is damage is bound to happen. Many times those who could have survived did not because adequate emergency supplies were not available.

Emergency food and water are essential to survive. No individual or even animals can survive for long without these two basic needs. Therefore water and food storage make an essential part of all emergency preparedness. With the advent of advance technology there are companies that produce emergency food products that can be stored for a longer duration, most for 5 year.  There are also many ways of preserving household food like frozen food and dried and dehydrated food.

Emergency water can be purchased in sturdy plastic containers, which usually have a 5 year shelf life as well, and a purifier can be kept in your disaster kit to ensure emergency drinking water. If a disaster catches you suddenly and you are without clean water you can use the alternative sources immediately.

- Hot water tank inside your home hot water tank

- Ice cubes

- Drain house pipes and faucets

Now there are alternative sources available outside your home which includes:

 - Rainwater

- Streams, rivers, and other moving bodies of water

- Ponds and lakes

- Natural springs

Generally, a 3 day supply of food and water is recommended to keep on hand for every individual in your family or group.

- Develop a habit of saving more food as you buy your groceries.

- Try to keep at least a supply for several days for you and your family until proper help reaches you.

- Some people like to have food for 2-3 months stored and use up the old food and restock with fresh supplies.  It’s really an individual choice.

- Food items like white rice, beans and wheat can be stored for longer period of time. – Mark the food products with specific purchase date. Masking tapes with marker pens can be used for this work.

How much food and water will be sufficient to store for emergencies depends entirely depends on the time and duration for which the food and water will be required.  Most emergency kits use the 3 day supply rule as well.  The main thing is to make sure you sure you are completely prepared to face any emergency.
